How to Greenlight Yourself on YouTube in 2025
Featuring Essie, Senior Manager of Creator Success at Spotter!
“There’s a major shift happening in entertainment right now. Creators aren’t waiting for permission. They’re building their own ecosystems, launching series, and creating studios that rival traditional TV.”
Essie works with some of the top creators on YouTube to help them scale their channels into full-fledged content businesses. If you're trying to stop winging it and start winning on YouTube, this is your roadmap.
STEP 1: Build for Ownership, Not Just Virality
Most creators are chasing short-form virality. But Essie reminds us that fast attention is not the same as long-term value.
“A lot of creators are chasing the ease and virality of short-form content on other platforms, and I get it, it feels fast and rewarding in the moment. But if we’re talking longevity and ownership? YouTube is still the platform.”
“It’s the only place where you can build long-form content that lives forever, earns revenue years later, and gives you full control over your own media empire.”
STEP 2: Operate Like a Studio, Not a Solo Act
Essie has seen the shift happen again and again: the moment creators stop trying to do it all alone.
“Hobbyists are still doing everything themselves like shooting, editing, scripting, posting. Empire builders understand they can’t do it all alone.”
“Empire builders build systems. They plan their content in advance, hire editors, build teams, create production calendars and treat their channel like a business, not a side hustle.”
Systematize your process. Develop consistency in your voice, your vision, and your workflow. YouTube is all about strategy.
If you don’t know how to build one, I’m dropping a Create Your Own Studio sprint this fall/winter where I’ll drop gems of what I’m doing and help you set up yours for success. Join the secret waitlist here: [Link]
STEP 3: Learn What Really Drives Growth
Too many creators obsess over views. But YouTube is rewarding something else entirely.
“Retention and watch time. Those are your golden signals.”
“Especially now with the rise of TV viewership on YouTube. People are watching from their couches, not just their phones. That means creators are making longer videos and audiences are sticking around.”
Ask yourself: are people actually watching your content all the way through? If not, rethink your format and structure. YouTube is the perfect place to test and learn.
STEP 4: Pitch With Strategy, Not Desperation
Yes, creators should be pitching themselves to brands. But not just to anyone.
“Be strategic. Pitch brands that actually align with your content and your audience. Don’t just chase logos.”
And don’t forget to show your receipts.
“Always come with receipts: your portfolio, your past work, even if your engagement isn’t off the charts. A lot of brands are looking for quality, not just quantity.”
Your Reminder: Start Before You Feel Ready
The biggest thing in your way? Waiting for the perfect moment.
“Too many creators wait for perfect conditions. They’re waiting for the right camera, the right setup, or the right moment. The truth is, that moment never really comes.”
“You have to give yourself permission to start messy, get better in public, and keep showing up.”
“Greenlighting yourself means betting on yourself before anyone else does. Perfectionism is just fear dressed up as planning.”
This is your sign to stop waiting. Start creating. You are the greenlight.
